Sometimes, you just can’t predict how a night is going to go. I rushed to make it home long before she did. I changed my clothes and put some music on the stereo. She was going to love this evening because everything was going to be perfect.
Lighting a few candles was easy, but the fireplace was a problem. Where was the Sunjel? I couldn’t find it anywhere. It wasn’t where I normally stored it in the basement. But, I knew I had more. I had ordered an entire case at the beginning of autumn. This was only the beginning of the New Year.
I looked in the basement again just to make sure. It still wasn’t there. I went out to the shed wondering why it would have been stored out there. It wasn’t. I thought about every possible choice I had and then, I decided that maybe I could have run out of Sunjel.
We don’t use an entire can every evening. We don’t need the fire that long. But, once you get a taste of the ventless gel fire producing no smoke, no spark, no mess and nice warmth, you get addicted to lighting a fire every evening.
I wasn’t any closer to finding the Sunjel when she finally came home. I took her a glass of wine and smiled the best smile I had. “Honey, it’s still going to be a perfect evening. But, we don’t have any Sunjel left.”
“What do you mean we don’t have Sunjel left,” she said, “I just bought a starter kit the other day?”

“Ok great! Where is it?”
The last place I ever would have thought to look, in the small door under the steps leading upstairs. It turns out she was trying to rush home and surprise me every bit as much as I was trying to surprise her. She just didn’t like carrying things from the basement. Imagine that!
